Over this 7 day course we will explore the possibilities of tapestry weaving as a contemporary practise, and come away from Sätergläntan with a completed tapestry as well as the skills to continue tapestry weaving on your own.
In the first part of the course, we will study the basics of tapestry weaving from warping, plain weave, soumak technique mark-making and how to create shapes and forms, all with colour and composition in mind. These hands-on sessions will be supported with short talks and discussions about the historical and contemporary context of tapestry – from the Ancient Andeans to the Bauhaus weaving workshop to contemporary artists working with weaving today.
Having completed your tapestry samplers, you will then take part in a short design workshop to plan your own tapestry project piece, which will then be completed by the end of the week.
Participants of varying confidence in weaving and design are welcome, and will be supported and encouraged both in a technical capacity, as well as through design methods that Hannah will introduce.
