Arts and crafts - form and tradition

Weaving, Sewing, Woodwork, Smithery or Knitting
Sätergläntan has yearly courses in Weaving, Sewing, Woodwork, Smithery and Knitting which derive their inspiration from traditional handicrafts. At Sätergläntan you will gain broad and deep knowledge and skills, valuable for your future studies and professional work. You will be studying in a dynamic and creative environment and will meet many interesting people.

The college is beautifully situated on the hillside of Knippboberget, looking down on the village of Insjön, about 3 km away. Sätergläntan is owned mainly by the National Association of Swedish Handicraft Societies, and the college plays an important role in preserving and developing the Swedish handicraft tradition, both technically and artistically.

The duration of the study programmes is one, two or three years. You apply for one year at a time. The third year is focused on entrepreneurship. If you have already completed training equivalent to Year 1 or Year 2, you can apply directly for the second and third year, respectively.

Type of education
Sätergläntan’s courses are overseen by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Vocational Education and belong to the category of supplementary stand-alone courses.

Course design
The courses are full-time and are both practical and theoretical. Lectures, lessons and group work cover theoretical aspects of your studies. Study trips to local heritage museums, other museums and different exhibitions form an important part of your education. Each course has either one or two co-ordinators and your studies will be enriched by guest teachers and lecturers, all of whom are highly skilled in their respective subjects. All the courses are conducted in Swedish.

Technique, materials, tools and methodologies
Materials and work processes are key elements of your training. Within each subject, we will focus on the tools, techniques, materials and methods of previous eras. Your studies will enable you to see the relationship between tradition, function, materials and technique.

Ecology and the Environment
Ecology and the environment are important and natural elements of our courses, and indeed of all the activities of Sätergläntan. Ecological thinking permeates our way of working and our pedagogical approach.

College facilities
As a student you have access to well-equipped workshops which you can also use after class hours, but not during the holidays. We have a library specializing in literature on arts and crafts, and folk art. In conjunction with the library, we have a study collection of older items of handicraft.

Examination and qualifications
At the end of the year you will be awarded a diploma.

Please note that all the courses are conducted in Swedish.
